the heritage project 2023

The gallery duster is a lightweight, longline jacket with a simple, unstructured opening and two side inseam pockets. Its subtle cocoon shape is created by box pleats in the deep hem, and cropped, cuffed sleeves keep the silhouette light and dynamic. With its open, buttonless style, the gallery duster is a perfect outer shell to show your beautifully composed layers.

Carefully pieced from antique and vintage indigo cotton panels, this extraordinary jacket is embellished with both historical and contemporary visible mending. The subtly contrasting ages and tonal depth of its original textiles combine to create something greater than the sum of its past...

colour : indigo
fabric : vintage cotton

care :
This piece showcases the ancient traditions of indigo dying and sashiko mending. To preserve this item be mindful of its modern and historic hand-stitching, in time adding your own mends and stitches with care as needed.

Authentic, plant-derived indigo dyes give this piece its rich and lively colour; unevenness and complexity are part of its natural character. Unlike synthetic dye, you can expect some indigo to transfer to lighter surfaces (even your skin) so take care during the first 5 washes, even though this fabric has not been dyed recently!

Air this piece between wears, keep out of direct sunlight and only wash in cold water by itself. Never spot clean, and iron the reverse with a cool iron (if you wish).

This unique piece is part of the heritage project 2023 by LJ struthers and the maker, a creative response to the beauty, longevity, and cultural history of its fabric components.

Every piece is designed and made in Hobart in a spirit of care for the craftsmanship of the past.

With you we share a respect for vintage and antique textiles which should not be abandoned to dust, but celebrated and worn, re-mended and reimagined, part of the fabric of a beautiful life.
