Shigaraki Ware : ceramic vase

A footed, faceted vase of unusual barrel-shape, hand formed from black clay and finished with matt white glaze.  

Shigaraki ware is made in Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. The region is counted as one of the six oldest pottery producing areas in Japan. The pottery produced there is characterised by its warm colour and highly textured finish, and remains a popular choice for table ware and decorative items.
