The rustic shino glaze is a hallmark of the oujigama pottery - its milky translucency and characteristic crawling or 'pin-holing' effect (where the glaze pulls away from the clay during the firing process) add textural drama and rustic warmth to each plate.

Established in 1900, the Seto-based Oujigama pottery began by producing traditional mortar and pestles, and is now a third generation maker of a wide range of hand thrown vessels and tableware.

Seto is considered the cultural home of Japanese ceramics, and the Oujigama moro (workshop) has been designated as a tangible cultural property by Seto City.

They specialise in the use of local Seto clay with thick Shinoyu-glaze, creating a milky white colour and a characteristic crawling or 'pin-holing' effect, where the glaze pulls away from the clay during the firing process.
