In 2009, Kobe Match Company was looking for a way to revive its archive of historic matchbox labels, whose vintage colours and miniature illustrations deserve to be enjoyed. TRUNK DESIGN recognised their appeal immediately, and together, the two businesses worked to produce a range of reissued matchboxes (and T-shirts, too), bringing Kobe's early 20th century design archive to a new generation.
Offset-printed on Sankou Diamond recycled fibreboard, the M.D.F matchboxes preserve a beautiful piece of cultural history and make a gift that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Each box contains 40 matches.

M.D.F. (Match Design Factory) is a collaboration between Kobe Match Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s last three remaining match manufacturers, and creative studio TRUNK DESIGN. In reimagining the lost archive of matchbox graphics as both useful (and giftable) matches, and a range of cool T-shirts, “my intention was to propose a new type of craftsmanship from a slightly different perspective, while preserving the production technology and business structure that makes Kobe Match one of the best in the country”, says third-generation Kobe Match President, Masafumi Sagayama.
