Nippon Note’s story starts with Apica and Kyokuto, two familiar names in Japanese stationery. Their exercise books have accompanied generations of schoolchildren, alongside notebooks made for work and everyday writing. Apica began in 1916, while Kyokuto grew from the stationery business Harukichi Sano started in 1922.

The two makers worked separately for almost a century before joining in 2019 to form Nippon Note. Okina, another Japanese stationery maker with roots in 1916, became part of the company in 2024. Each brought its own history of making the paper goods people use throughout their lives.

Today, Nippon Note sees paper as a way to pass words and ideas from one generation to the next. It continues to champion writing by hand alongside digital tools, making room for people to learn, think and leave a record of their lives on paper.
