A small hand-thrown stoneware cup with a gently flared profile. White slip glaze settles over iron-rich clay, revealing soft speckles and exposed edges where the darker clay shows through. The gently flared rim and raised foot create a balanced form, equally suited to tea, coffee or small servings.

Wonki and J is the work of creative couple Wonki Kim and Jaeha Lee, making simple pieces for daily use. From their Melbourne studio they skilfully combine 15th century Joseon Dynasty Buncheong Dumbeong pottery techniques with a minimalist sensibility and influences from their Korean heritage.

In Buncheong ceramics, white slip slides across iron-rich clay forms. The blistering heat of the kiln captures the slip’s flow and movement in beautiful drips and pools, sprinkled with unique iron spots, pits, and crackles.

The results are at once wild and constrained, the couple’s minimalist forms communicating stillness and quiet strength.
